REAL SHERIAUNA

Sheriauna is a social butterfly who is vibrant and loves to try new things. She is kind, loves her friends and family, and is an overall positive, insightful person.

Sheriauna enjoys being active in sports and is a competitive track and field athlete. But her favorite thing to do is dance. Sheriauna has been dancing since she was 2 years old and she always says “dance is her passion!”

She doesn’t walk through life…she DANCES! Sheriauna has enjoyed participating in PLAYSAFE presentations with the War Amps to bring awareness about child amputees and their abilities. Sheriauna is also an ambassador for Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital and helps to bring awareness to the importance of supporting kids with disabilities and increasing disability awareness.

Since the publishing of the first I Am Sheriauna book, Sheriauna travels with her mom to share her story with other children and also to speak to educators that will be working with other children who have exceptionalities. When Sheriauna is not busy with school and extracurricular activities she spends time with her family and friends, baking, watching movies, creating choreography, sketching, and singing.

Sheriauna’s goal is to pursue performing arts and is currently working on her acting career. She is hilarious and loves to make people around her laugh.

Our 6th-grade teachers were able to use the story of I Am Sheriauna to help introduce our prosthetic arm engineer and design project in, hopefully, a much more authentic way. Then to also have Sherylee and Sheriauna come to speak to our students brought the story to life. They did an amazing job of discussing the importance of representation, intersectionality, terminology, and the joys and challenges of Sheriauna's experience. Students will have more of an appreciation of the fact that the prosthesis is an extension of the owner's body, the importance of human-centered design, and just how to be a better human and friend.

I don't even know how to express my gratitude for this book you have written. I ordered three. And when they arrived, I literally dropped everything I was doing and tore open the box. It was perfect. I bawled like I did when we first found out that there was going to be something wrong with our little perfect peanut inside of me 7 years ago. But this time they were tears of joy because now she will know she isn't alone. And this book has given her a voice. A voice to share with her classmates and anyone who dare to mess with her. She took a copy to school with her yesterday and read it to her class and gave them the opportunity to ask her questions about her little arm. She was so proud! She stayed awake last night until I got home from work to tell me all about it. Thank you doesn't seem like enough for the gratitude I am feeling right now, but thank you thank you thank you! ♡

I received your book from a friend of mine for my daughter who was born without a right arm. It is such a beautifully written book and my 4 year old daughter loves it. Made me tear up a bit too. Thank you so much for writing it...it’s amazing!
